How to Set Up Cronus Zen on Xbox Series X|S — 2026 Walkthrough

· 3 min read · By Vertex Zens Team

Setting up Cronus Zen on Xbox Series X|S in 2026 is even simpler than PS5 because Xbox's HID layer is more permissive — but Microsoft's controller-side authentication has its own gotchas. Skip the wrong step and the Series X will silently disconnect every 30 seconds. This walkthrough is the version we send Vertex Zens new members who play on Xbox.

If you don't have your first script picked yet, head to a roundup — Warzone, Fortnite, Apex Legends — grab the GPC, then come back here.

What you need before you start

  • Cronus Zen device (with the box's USB-C cable)
  • A Windows PC for Cronus Zen Studio
  • Your Xbox Series X or Series S console
  • An Xbox Wireless Controller (the standard one or the Elite Series 2)
  • A data-capable USB-C cable for controller-to-Zen (charge-only cables fail silently)
  • Xbox-specific: a regular Xbox controller (the Adaptive Controller has known quirks with Cronus Zen)

Step 1 — Update Cronus Zen firmware on PC

Plug Cronus Zen into your PC. Open Cronus Zen Studio. Click Tools → Update Firmware. Wait for it to finish (30–90 seconds). The Zen will reboot automatically.

Why it matters on Xbox: Microsoft's controller authentication checks the Zen's identity every few seconds. Out-of-date firmware fails this check intermittently, which causes the disconnect-every-30-seconds problem.

Step 2 — Pair the Xbox controller

You have two options on Xbox:

  • Wireless via Studio Bluetooth Manager: open Device → Bluetooth Manager, put the Xbox controller in pairing mode (hold the small pair button on top of the controller until the Xbox button flashes), pair in Studio.
  • Wired direct: plug the Xbox controller into the Zen's INPUT port with a data-capable USB-C cable. No pairing required.

Wired is more reliable on Xbox specifically — Microsoft's BT stack has historically had more disconnect issues with the Zen than Sony's. If you can run wired, do it.

Step 3 — Flash your first script

In Studio, open the GPC file you downloaded. Click Build → Compile. Right-click slot 2 (always slot 2 first time) and click Flash to Slot. Wait for the flash. Unplug from PC.

Step 4 — Wire to Xbox

Plug the Cronus Zen's OUTPUT port into your Xbox's front USB port (or one of the rear USB-A ports — both work on Series X). Plug your Xbox controller into the Zen's INPUT port. The Zen's OLED should display the slot.

Step 5 — Boot Xbox and test

Power on the Xbox. The Xbox will see the combination as a standard Xbox controller. Boot your game. Cycle to slot 2 with the screen buttons. Test the script's main combo.

Common Xbox-specific gotchas

  • Disconnect every 30 seconds. Almost always out-of-date firmware. Re-do step 1.
  • Xbox button does nothing. Some scripts intercept the Xbox button. Find the script's "Xbox passthrough" toggle in its GPC, or use a different slot.
  • Elite Series 2 paddles unresponsive. Cronus Zen passes paddles through as standard buttons. You may need to remap them in the Xbox Accessories app.
  • Controller turns off after 15 minutes. Xbox controller idle timeout. Wired connection avoids it; wireless requires you to press a button periodically.
  • Game Pass cloud streaming doesn't see the controller. Cloud streaming uses a different input pipeline that bypasses local USB devices. Cronus Zen only works for native console play, not cloud streaming.
